Western Brook Pond Boat Tour
Western Brook Pond fjord in Gros Morne National Park provides a dramatic setting
for a boat tour. The Long Range Mountains, the northernmost extent of the
Appalachians, contain numerous glacially-carved fjords. One of the most spectacular
is the Park's largest lake, Western Brook Pond. This 16 km lake with a depth of 165m
is home to Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout and Arctic Char, as well as an unusual
colony of cliff nesting gulls.
There is no better way to explore this scenic delight than by taking the
Western Brook Pond Boat Tour. On board, behold the spectacular glacier-carved
land-locked fjord, waterfalls cascading over 2000 feet that often turn to mist
before reaching the pond, billion year-old cliffs and wildlife sightings.
The boat tour is reached via Route 430, 27 km north of Rocky Harbour. From
the parking lot there is a pleasant 40 minute walk to the dock. A board walk
trail carries you over the fragile coastal plain, once located below sea level.
Pause a while to examine the variety of plant life and look for wildlife. A
light weight jacket is advisable while aboard the boat. Picnic tables and
washrooms can be found at dockside. A sheltered waiting area has indoor
washroom facilities and canteen services. Our two vessels, the Westernbrook
I and III, have a combined carrying capacity of 133 people for this
two-hour narrative tour.
This famous tour has been featured in National Geographic magazine and
on it's television program.

Take a cruise on scenic Bonne Bay from Norris Point. The scenic Bonne
Bay is actually two connected fjords. The longest of the two is the South Arm,
which runs more or less straight for 18 km out to the mouth of the bay. The
East Arm is joined to the South Arm across a shallow sill, known as The Tickle
and is by far the deepest of the two fjords. The tour passes over waters as
deep as anywhere in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, reaching depths of 230 m (756 feet).
Live commentary throughout the tour highlights the surrounding features such as
Gros Morne Mountain, the geology of the Tablelands, the whales that frequent the
deep waters of this fjord and bird sightings such as bald eagles. A brief
history of the small communities nestled on the shores is also provided.
During the cruise opportunity exist for all CFA's (come from aways) to partake
in an age-old tradition in becoming an Honorary Newfoundlander. This age old
tradition, known as a "Screech-in", features live traditional music, Newfoundland
sayings, a lively dance step and a sample of the Newfoundland famous rum - Screech.
